If you stick with this analogy, we are asking for white-hat hacking only! All changes must be approved.
However, like the computer hackers, students will have a chance to really step "out of the box" and do something a bit different from their peers. Because of the potential variety of students choosing to participate, large numbers of students might all seek to change things and be "different." In this way, education will become much more personalized than it has been for the last century.

The exercising of the various 21st Century Skills.
    Opportunities to work toward a post-secondary degree, a post-secondary scholarship, and/or a job.
The above tools will be implemented in the context of edutainment. Students will enjoy some form of entertainment, and then launch their treasure hunt, project, or prize quest by building on the entertainment:
"Girl Meets Permanent Record" (Season 3, Episode 4 of Girl Meets World) - Students will discover how their school record is even more important than it was for their parents. Parents will be surprised at what their kids discover.
Tomorrowland - Several business ideas are hidden within the movie. Students and businesses will work together to bring them into being.
Doing It With Class, the ultimate reality program - Students will participate in a reality program that will be all reality, with no scripting, game scenarios, or external coaching.

In referring to "hacking the educational system," we are using an analogy to computing, whereby smart, clever, and/or devious programmers find ways to break the system.
Hacking computers creates a real security risk, if somebody with bad intentions tries to break the system. However, once the crisis of hacking was recognized, companies started to invite hackers to break the system, so they could find and fix the flaws. Those who hack without permission are black-hat hackers, and are illegal. Those who hack with permission are white-hat hackers. They are perfectly legal. There are some hackers who are known as gray-hat, in that they go beyond the permissions granted.
We will be clear to all students that there are right ways and wrong ways to get around the system. Even the American colonists formally asked permission before declaring independence.

In short, the program to "hack the educational system" will do what educators have been trying to do for perhaps the last century: trick students into learning by making learning fun or by providing other incentives.
This system is currently being developed by a small group of teachers at PA Cyber. If your school would also like to explore this program, contact Ed Breaux.

Tools are still under development. They fall into the following categories, which may overlap each other:
Treasure-hunt style games where students have to find hidden information (Easter eggs, if you will) and then act on the information.
Cross-disciplinary projects, with multiple teachers awarding points for work completed.
Contests with prizes, involving both educational points and personal rewards.
The exercising of the various 21st Century Skills.
    Opportunities to work toward a post-secondary degree, a post-secondary scholarship, and/or a job.

A critical rule for Hacking the Educational System is to let the program develop dynamically, with students and teachers actively exploring possibilities at all times.
Another key concept is to provide as many incentives as possible for both students and teachers.
    This should be fun!
    This should be rewarding!
This should improve the innovator's chances of success in their personal goals.
    Recognition should be liberally given.
Incentives should come from everywhere. How can we recruit as many stakeholders as possible?

Traditional educational approaches aren't achieving the desired goals. Businesses have identified the necessary 21st century skills that students need to learn, but schools and educators are still struggling to implement the necessary reforms.
Here's an idea: Reward the students for demonstrating 21st century skills by exempting them from traditional requirements. Continue to do what you have always done, but see how many students are willing to go the extra mile. Students may choose to do alternatives because (1) they're more fun, (2) they get to play the "rebel," (3) they are earning credentials as a leader, (4) they are improving their chances of getting a good job, or (5) they're getting out of having to do boring work.
This program is called "hacking the educational system" since students have to figure things out for themselves while they "get around the system." However, students will be able to help each other out by sharing "secrets" that they discover.
In short, the program to "hack the educational system" will do what educators have been trying to do for perhaps the last century: trick students into learning by making learning fun or by providing other incentives.
